Bar Soba

Bar Soba:

This blog will explore different food locations around Glasgow and give an account of my experience. In this first entry I will discuss the meal that I recently had at Bar Soba with a couple of my friends. This restaurant has three locations within Glasgow, however we decided to go to the one situated inside merchant square. This is an open plan indoor area with a number of restaurants located inside and provides a good atmosphere within the restaurant.

We arrived at around 6:45 and after a short wait of around 5 minuets we were quickly seated. The restaurant itself is modern with a large number of small tables located both on the ground floor of the restaurant and on a raised balcony which overlooks the outdoor seating area (while still being technically inside). The server was very helpful, explaining the order process, which was different to usual due to Covid, as well as revealing that we would be eligible for 50% of all food and 25% of drinks as we were students. With this fresh in our minds, we ordered some drinks, with all three of us opting for a draught beer. These did take some time to arrive at the table, however this gave the group time to assess the menu.

There was a large selection of Asian cuisine and Asian inspired items on the menu. The starters section listed a number of small plates that could be used as starters or combine a number of these to form a main course dish. Bar soba also offered a more conventional main dish section with rice and noodle dishes taking centre stage. The restaurant also offered a number of sides, which were prominently ‘loaded fries’ of different varieties. I settled on the Singapore noodles (£12.50 or £6.25 with discount) and a side of salt and pepper squid (£6.75 or £3.38 with discount)

When the drinks finally arrived, I was slightly disappointed due to the beer being flat and not very refreshing, however this was made up for by the food, which did also take a considerable length of time to arrive. The Singapore noodles were delicious, with grilled chicken, shredded beef, and Atlantic prawns, all mixed in together with spicy garlic and chilli noodles. The portion size was perfect and left me full and satisfied. I did however also have the salt and pepper squid side. This for me was the highlight, and although there weren’t quite as many as I would have liked on the plate, of all the dishes I tried (both mine and my friends), the squid came out on top.

Overall, I enjoyed my experience at Bar Soba despite the poor quality of draught lager and long waiting times for both food and drink. The atmosphere and setting, along with the tastiness of the food and the massive discount that we received tipped the balance in the restaurants favour. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone but particularly students as the quality of food for the price is impressive.
